Winter Is the Perfect Time to Design Your Dream Garden

Winter is the best time to start a new garden or to re-design an existing one.

A good basic design will give the gardener guidance what to eventually plant in spring.

In winter trees and shrubs can be re-planted and patios, verandahs, braais, ponds, swimming pools, water features etc. can be introduced in the garden.

If big enough the garden can be divided in various areas, like a special place for children to play , including a  doll’s house, a swing and other playground equipment. A rockery can make an interesting point or a special rose-garden, a “Zen” garden with sand, rocks, bamboo, stone lanterns and water features, invites for meditation, a “potager” or Kitchen garden delivers fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs for the household and the entrance to the property can be designed to have an impressive impact for visitors.

To define certain areas walls can be built, well trimmed hedges can be planted or trellies can be erected. To enter those separate areas  pergolas, arches  with climbers, Chinese “moon gates” come to mind.

Pathways may be re-directed and fitted with flagstones, tiles, wood and cobble stones for comfortable and safe passage. Pebbles can also be used, but to avoid weed penetrating it is advisable to place them on a concrete surface or to place plastic sheets underneath.

The edges of the beds should be defined by cobble stones, well clipped short hedges, stone filled wire mesh, continuous concrete walls and – a bit old fashioned- decorative little fences. Another way of  containing  the beds is to raise them. This has the advantage that they will be filled with topsoil, which allows to control the quality of the ground where plants will eventually be set.

On a smaller scale: containers can be single or arranged in groups or introduced into flower beds. Particularly impressive are topiaries. For decoration sculptures, fountains, rocks, hanging baskets etc. can be used.

Now the technical part:

Consider irrigation where necessary, look at the paint of the house and walls to match the colors, bring in garden lights und piped music and last –not least- provide a shed or covered space for gardening tools and equipment.
