HURLINGHAM EXT
Client’s brief:
1. add on a covered patio
2. add on a double garage
3. add on a studio
4. create an entrance hall
5. create a swimming pool
Implementation:
Aa studio plus store room and a double garage were created in front of the existing residence with an entrance hall in between. As the house follows the sloping ground 6 steps had been built to arrive at the lower level
On the lower level a separate covered patio was created, attached to the house by a Perspex roof.
For the swimming pool on the same level tons of fill material had to be imported to level the slope. A new retaining wall towards the street was covered by a pergola with Bougainvilleas and Orange Jasmin
The swimming pool had a ‘ceremonial wall” with a waterfall. Hidden behind was the garden shed and the pool pump and filter.

Client’s brief:
Implementation:
We decided to attach the patio to the main building, next to the living room.
As the gound was sloping we created three levels down from the patio. The first level down had 3 steps to the swimming pool with wooden pool deck, the next step was the basin to collect the overflowing water from the pool, the next step the bottom garden path. Opposite the pool a statue was positioned with buried lighting.
For the new entrance we had to remove some old steps which were in the wrong position and create a new entrance path with steps and a stainless steel railing. A matching remote controlled entrance gate was installed.
For the open plan kitchen we decided for a wooden look to match the adjoining dining room. For wall tiles we used white “subway “tiles, which in the meantime became classics.
In the “kitchen garden” between house and garage we created a pergola, planters to hide the plumbing and a water feature opposite the bedoom door.
Parktown North
Client’s brief:
Re-style all interiors, create a new entrance with guest toilet, add on a billiard- and a play room, convert the existing terrace into a covered patio with braai, build a new double garage with guest suite on top. During the building works new requirements came up: create an outbuilding for sauna, change room and shower, a wine cellar and a garage for multiple cars and a generator housing. Also: re-design boundary wall and entrance gates.
Implementation:
Kitchen and all bathroom were stripped and re-styled. The most spectacular transformation was the kitchen from before.
A new entrance was built with the owner’s favourite red door: I, billiard room and play room were built, and the covered patio with braai. Piped music in all rooms.
A new double garage with guest suite on top
An outbuilding for Sauna with shower and change room was added, the staff room was renovated and a Jacuzzi was set in the garden.
When all was done the owner decided to have a wine cellar under the patio with a window to the inside of the swimming pool. We had to underpin the foundations of the adjoining walls: A new swimming pool was built with tiling throughout
The view from the new wine cellar to the pool:
As the owner needed more parking space, but didn’t want to sacrifice the garden a garage for 5 cars as well as a housing for the generator was created underground: C, carefully trying not to disturb the roots of the existing established trees.
Finally a new boundary wall and entrance gates with a guard house were constructed.

Client’s brief:
Implementation:
In order to connect the garage to the main building we created a small atrium, a small entrance hall leading to the existing big entrance hall, a new entrance door was installed opposite the atrium. The back of the atrium became the new scullery. (IMG 1462)
We demolished the two rooms adjoining the entrance hall and supported the mezzanine above by a steel beam, We re-configured an adjoining bedroom, created a new family room and a new fireplace.
The kitchen was extended, re-styled and a new scullery created. Staff rooms were re-organized and renovated.
The existing main bathroom was stripped and converted into a dressing room with built-in wardrobes. Next to the dressing room a new bathroom was created featuring a freestanding bath tub, two basins, a toilet and a steam shower.
The building of the bathroom for the girls was postponed.
Unfortunately we were not permitted to take photographs of the interior of the residence due to security concerns.
